Building a new rig.

Posted by DarkMana Aug. 13, 2008 @ 8:02 PM EDT

I'm now doing what I should have done nearly three years ago -- purchasing parts and building my own computer. I'll be updating this post as I go.

ESSENTIAL PARTS

CASE: Coolermaster CM590
PSU: Silverstone Element ST50EF 500W
M/B: ASUS P5Q Pro
CPU: Intel E8400
RAM: Mushkin Redlines PC2-8000 2x2GB
VIDEO: Diamond Radeon HD 4850
DRIVE: Samsung SH-S203N DVD±RW w/ Lightscribe
HDD: Hitachi Deskstar 500GB

WISHLIST

+ Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (CPU heatsink/fan)
+ Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev.2 (VGA heatsink)

PROGRESS

The system is now built and, miraculously, booted on the first attempt (seriously one of the best feelings in the world). Running Windows XP Home.

awesome! i got a few questions though

why coolermaster case and not antec?
why Radeon and not nvidia?
why not Corsair RAM?

I would probably change a few things due to personal taste but it's still a really awesome gaming rig. What games are you gonna play on it?

Oct. 5, 2008 | 12:03 AM DarkMana responds:

I have experience with Coolermaster; none with Antec. I prefer simple, functional cases over flashy feature-saturated one.

I also have experience with ATI, none with NVIDIA.

Corsair was actually my first choice, but this particular set of Mushkin memory was on sale and has intense overclocking capabilities.

I play COD4, TF2, CS:S, Mass Effect, UT3, Oblivion, WoW, Gears of War ... a lot of games.

Oct. 5, 2008 | 7:20 PM Toast says:

hah you want it? I signed up as toast in 2005 but now I hate myself for doing that. when you really start to become part of a community where you get to know people very well it's annoying to be reffered to as a "toast" :P

darkmana: i have tf2 css wow and oblivion too. the ones I play the most are wow and css, maybe we could play together sometimes. My WoW server is Draenor, just incase we are both from the same server without knowing :p (which is highly unlikely)

Oct. 6, 2008 | 7:35 PM DarkMana responds:

Yeah, I'm on Perenolde, but I don't plan on renewing my subscription anytime soon.

You can add my Steam ID if you want, "_darkmana".

Oct. 12, 2008 | 9:11 PM Toast says:

maybe i can live with you in canada

Oct. 13, 2008 | 10:04 PM DarkMana responds:

Actually I kind of wish I was attending school in the UK right now.

Oct. 23, 2008 | 12:44 PM Toast says:

how about this
Antec 900 + random 500-550W PSU
Core 2 duo E8500
Radeon 4870 512mb
Corsair DOMINATOR 4gb 800mhz
P5Q Pro intel chipset

Nov. 5, 2008 | 7:30 PM DarkMana responds:

Sounds good, except for the 'random' power supply. :P
Do some research, be sure that the PSU you buy will actually serve for the life of your computer.

FYI the one I've got is amazing and outperforms all other power supplies in its tier (500W). Also it's quite inexpensive.

Nov. 1, 2008 | 12:08 AM Toast says:

where can i get motherboards compatible with the new i7 technology from intel? It's still 45nm technology but apparently you need a new chipset, and they say the only motherboard that supports it at the moment is the intel x58 :s surely there must be others, i7 is coming out in a few weeks.

Nov. 5, 2008 | 7:27 PM DarkMana responds:

No idea, been too busy enjoying my PC to follow hardware news.

Nov. 22, 2008 | 5:28 PM DarkMana responds:

Nov. 16, 2008 | 11:36 PM toxicdevil93 says:

And building your own comp?
Damn, good luck, that will be hard!

Nov. 22, 2008 | 5:28 PM DarkMana responds:

You're a bit late, but thanks. :D

Nov. 17, 2008 | 6:35 AM Toast says:

hey are you gonna buy left 4 dead?

i need people to play co-op with :)

Nov. 22, 2008 | 5:28 PM DarkMana responds:

Pre-ordered it. :D

Dec. 18, 2008 | 11:25 PM yugimt says:

Change that CPU to a Quad, and you got yourself a mad Gaming Computer.

Dec. 23, 2008 | 8:36 PM DarkMana responds:

Bah, the jump from dual- to quad-core isn't worth it for games yet. You pay nearly double the price for equal performance (at least until more games actually start to use multiple cores).
